NetSuite Resellers vs. Partners: what buyers need to know

The difference between a NetSuite reseller and a NetSuite Alliance Partner affects the implementation services you receive and the support relationship you can expect. Here is what to evaluate.

In the NetSuite partner ecosystem, there are a few designations that affect the relationship between the client, the partner and Oracle. For buyers, especially in regulated industries making long-term ERP decisions, understanding those distinctions is more than a purchasing detail. It impacts the quality of available services, the support relationship post go-live, and the relevance of the firm’s expertise to your specific needs.

The structure of the NetSuite partner eco-system

NetSuite is sold through a mix of direct sales and through a channel of authorized partners. Partners come in a few flavors, depending on their relationship to Oracle, their level of certification, and their track record of successful implementations.

Solution providers and resellers can sell NetSuite licenses and usually provide implementation services in conjunction with the software sale. Their main commercial relationship with Oracle is the margin on resale of licenses.

Alliance Partners have a more structured relationship with Oracle including performance-based recognition, access to additional resources and support channels, and accountability for quality of delivery to their client base.

The annual NetSuite Alliance Partner Spotlight Award honors partners for vertical excellence, meaning superior quality of delivery within a specific industry segment. It is not bought or earned based on firm size - it’s about client results in a specific practice area.

The practical difference between Resellers and Alliance Partners

The real-world difference between a reseller and an Alliance Partner in the implementation context is accountability. Alliance Partners are accountable to Oracle for the quality of delivery in their defined areas of specialization. Software is largely a volume game for the reseller.

This distinction is especially important in 2 situations: when the implementation includes complex compliance requirements that require domain expertise, and when the post-go-live support and enhancement services are anticipated to go beyond the initial engagement.

An Alliance Partner with specific vertical recognition has shown Oracle that their delivery in that vertical meets quality standards visible to Oracle through client feedback and engagement data. Accountability creates a different set of incentives than a purely transactional relationship.

What is meant by recognition and tier

NetSuite program partner tier designations, such as Star, Premier, etc., are based on a combination of certification levels, number of implementations, and client satisfaction metrics. Higher tiers usually mean more active and experienced partners.

Vertical recognition, such as the Spotlight Award for a specific slice of an industry, says something else: demonstrated prowess in a defined field. A partner with BioTech, BioPharma or Medical Device recognition has a track record in your regulatory environment that a general high-tier partner may not have, for regulated life sciences and healthcare buyers.

The better question is how many years in a row the partner has earned vertical recognition and not which tier the partner is at. Consistent recognition over multiple years shows a sustained commitment to a particular area, not just one good client result.

Service model differences affecting buyers

Software resellers have a service model that is built around the software transaction. Implementation services may be carried out by the same firm or may be subcontracted to a third party. The depth of the capability to implement varies a lot.

Alliance Partner companies are typically built around delivery quality as a core business with software resale as part of the relationship. The value proposition is the implementation team in terms of the delivery outcomes in their chosen verticals, the reputation of the firm depends on it.

The practical implication for the buyer is to assess the implementation and support capability of the partner irrespective of their partner tier or resale volume. A high volume reseller that outsources implementation work to less experienced resources may deliver a lower quality experience than a smaller specialized Alliance Partner whose consultants deliver every engagement personally.

What buyers in regulated industries need to know specifically

Regulated life sciences and healthcare buyers have 3 additional considerations in partner selection beyond the standard evaluation framework.

Regulatory responsibility. In a regulated environment, the partner’s configuration decisions are embedded in the validated system. The partner building the system is responsible to make sure the system meets regulatory requirements at audit time. This responsibility should be reflected in the engagement agreement.

Specificity of vertical recognition. NetSuite Spotlight Award Segment by Industry Alliance Partner recognized for Food and Beverage expertise is not equal to Alliance Partner recognized for BioTech or BioPharma expertise. The exact vertical recognition should be aligned with the regulatory environment of your organization.

Relationship model post go-live. Ongoing support to regulated organizations needs to be in line with the compliance needs of the system. The partner's post go-live model—managed services, enhancement services, and compliance support—should be assessed together with the scope of the initial implementation. A go-live partner that leaves the organization and disengages means it will be without compliance-aware support that it will require as the business and regulatory environment changes.
